The rapid development of technology enables many innovations that make human life easier. These innovations can be used in various areas of life. One of the results of technological development that is currently popular is Artificial Intelligence.
The term artificial intelligence was first used in 1950 by Alan Turing in his paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”. Turing, known as the “father of computer science”, discovered this ability by answering his own question about whether machines could think. From this question, Turing offered a test that is now known as the “Turing Test”, where this test is the precursor to the creation of AI.
John McCarthy gives a definition of AI as a machine or science for making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. This intelligence is related to the same task of understanding human intelligence through computers. In addition, Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig distinguish two approaches to understanding the potential of AI, the human approach and the ideal approach. The human approach divides AI into two definitions: systems that think like humans and systems that act like humans. The ideal approach states that AI is a system that thinks and acts rationally.
In short, IBM defines AI as a field that combines computer science and deep data sets to enable problem solving. It can be concluded that AI is a system that allows machines to think and act rationally in solving problems.
There are some features as a result of AI that can be used in real life, such as
- Speech recognition
This feature allows human speech recognition to be processed into a written format. Speech recognition is now used by many mobile devices, such as Siri and Google Voice.
- Customer service
The computer service can answer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) such as shipping, cross-selling products or suggesting sizes for users and more. This feature can be found on e-commerce sites in the form of messaging bots.
- Computer Vision
This form of AI can derive meaningful information from an image, video or other visual input to take action based on that input. It can be found in radiological imaging in healthcare or self-driving cars in the automotive industry.
- Recommendation engines
It is quite familiar to humans. It makes Youtube recommend you videos on a similar topic to what you like or what you have already watched. The feature uses data on past consumption behaviour by using AI algorithms. It also enables relevant add-on recommendations for online stores during the customer’s checkout process.
- Automated stock trading
This feature can make thousands or even millions of trades per day without human intervention. It is designed to optimize stock portfolios.
